Dexter and Deb
Okay. Here are my two cents. If you’re reading the tag and you don’t know what I’m about to talk about, SPOILERS PRZ (but why are you reading the tag?) Ahem.
I’m very skeeved out by it. As for the whole, “you watch a show about a sympathetic serial killer but incest creeps you out?” I give my age old “believable in the context of the world that’s been created.” In Dexter’s world, of course we sympathize with a serial killer; we’re in his head and therefore he’s in ours. But other than that aspect, it’s the real world. In the real world, incest gives people the willies.
However, I don’t think this plot point is unsalvageable. It’s not the therapist’s “fault,” she was just doing her job. Perhaps Deb has some complex about men that is related to Dexter and she needs to work through it. Haven’t you ever had a sex dream about someone totally inappropriate? Say, a friend’s dad or a coworker you would never, ever sleep with in a million years? It doesn’t necessarily mean she wants to have sex with him in real life.
I guess my point is, this plot point is creepy, but it’s not black and white. It’s not just, are they going to hump it out or aren’t they. It could be that Deb needs to think about these things to get to be a whole person again. It could be (definitely) leading to something significant in the final two seasons, like Deb finally figuring out Dexter’s secret.
I’m unsure what I’ll do if this plays out on the hump it out side. I might honestly stop watching the show. But I have faith in the writers.
